About the Event
In the 1960s, Diversity and Inclusion programs began to populate the corporate American landscape. These evolved into educational programs in the 1990s. In the 21st century, the concept of equity entered into the corporate human resource space. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion emerged into a specific discipline. And yet, for decades, these initiatives have consistently failed to disrupt the status quo. Why?
In this workshop, participants will explore the habits and norms associated with White culture and how White cultural norms have consistently and pervasively dominated the corporate workplace as a singular cultural expectation. This monocultural approach has turned DEI initiatives into assimilation programs, perpetuating racist harm.
In this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the behaviors, habits, and potential harm associated with White, monocultural norms
- Implement restorative practices to harness the benefits of a multicultural workplace
- Progress equity by applying an antiracist framework to personal behaviors and practices in the workplace
Participants will gain an historic perspective of DEI programs and how they have failed to create equitable workplaces. They will develop racial equity tools to apply in their area of influence within their organizations. Participants will achieve a new understanding of White culture, and how to intervene on current cultural norms to create radical inclusion in culturally diverse workplaces.
All participations will receive a certificate of completion.

Monica Knight is an employee relations professional who specializes in restorative workplace practices, conflict resolution strategies, leadership, and organizational development. She believes that it is nearly impossible to hate someone once you truly understand them. The following quotes accurately reflect how she lives her life: “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” (Einstein) and “If you understand each other, you will be kind to each other.” (Steinbeck) Monica received her Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management from Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Robyn Short (she/her/hers) is the founder and CEO of Workplace Peace Institute and the founder and Board Chair of Peace & Conciliation Project. She is an organization systems design consultant and researcher, peace-building trainer, mediator, racial equity consultant and coach, and restorative justice facilitator. She is the founder and publisher of GoodMedia Press, an independent book publisher whose mission is to promote peace and social justice through books and other media. Dr. Short is an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University in the Master of Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution program, the Master of Leadership and Negotiation at Bay Path University, and the College of Innovation and Design at Texas A&M at Commerce Dr. Short has authored four books on peace building.
